IWC Aquatimer Chrono Designer Watch Review

The IWC Aquatimer watch collection brings IWC's passion for engineering to the genre of professional dive timepieces. In a range of models in both steel and titanium, some featuring a chronograph complication, the IWC Aquatimer watches offer both great style and tremendous technical fascination. Consistent across this model range, is the unique rotating bezel, which is found underneath the crystal, and is operated via a crown on the side of the case. The most specialized models within the Aquatimer watch collection are the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 watch, which boasts exceptional water resistance for saturation diving, and the innovative Split-Minute Chronograph watch which employs a unique supplementary minute hand with a flyback function, thus enabling easier measurement of critical underwater times. The IWC Aquatimer watch collection is powered exclusively by selfwinding mechanical movements which have been designed for optimum durability and carefully adjusted for maximum precision by the watchmakers of the House.

The IWC Aquatimer Chrono was one of those watches that I thought I'd never add to my collection. I had seen pictures of it on the net and I read posts by people who loved their Aquatimers, but that wasn't enough to send me rushing to buy one. What really got me hooked was the engineering that went into designing the case to withstand a depth of 2000 meters. I'm a dive watch fan. I grew up on the water and I always remember seeing men wearing dive watches as I grew up. To me, a dive watch is a man's watch and it says a lot about the type of person the wearer is. To me, the IWC Aquatimer Chrono is a watch for a guy who's not afraid of showing off his masculinity by the watch he wears, and it shows that this person is ready to head out on an adventure at a moments notice.

What sent me running to buy this watch was the fact that I was about to sell my 18kt gold vintage cal. 89 to a friend of mine. I knew that there would be a void in my collection without an IWC so the Aquatimer was just a logical choice for me. Prior to getting this watch, I had never seen it in person so I wasn't sure how well it would look on my 7-inch wrist. Needless to say when I put it on for the first time I was very happy with the way it looked and I could instantly see why so many people loved their Aquatimers so much. It is very impressive looking, and you can tell that it's built like a submarine.

My Aquatimer's case measures 41mm in diameter, 14mm thick and 48mm from lug to lug, that is if you can call them lugs. While not being the largest sports watch on the market, it is a behemoth in its own right. Thankfully the titanium material used makes it extremely comfortable. I remember reading somewhere that it is 40% lighter the conventional stainless steel. Thankfully a solid gold version is not available, due to its soft consistency, but could you imagine what it could have weighed? The person who would have worn such a watch would have had to alternate arms every once in a while in order for the muscles to develop equally. My watch weighs in at 113g, pretty skimpy, but not too bad as far as titanium sports watches are concerned.

The entire IWC Aquatimer Chrono case has absolutely no polished surfaces; this is something that I look for in a sports watch. This combined with the darker titanium color makes it very stealth like. The odds on someone commenting on it from afar are next to nil, then again, if you are purchasing a watch in order to get that effect, the Aquatimer wouldn't even make your short list. The edges are very sharp and cut to precision, you would almost think it was carved out by computer guided lasers.

You would think that 14mm in thickness would make it sit very high on ones wrist, on the contrary this one does not. Because of the case back's cone shape, it digs into your wrist and begs to be worn tightly. Strange, I usually love to wear my watches loosely; this one is surprisingly more comfortable worn snug. The case back is beautifully engraved with the traditional Aquatimer Submarine. It is also written "International Watch Co. Schaffhausen" and it is also screwed down in order to guarantee its impressive 2000m water-resistance rating.

The crown is a work of art. It measures 6mm in diameter and protrudes just over 3mm from the case, but because it sits high on the case, it does not dig into your wrist. I have never owned a watch that had a crown with as much bite. It is amazingly reassuring to unscrew and set. Another surprising attribute is that once it is unscrewed there is no play. In other words if I try to wiggle it, in any of the setting positions, it is as solid as a rock. I cannot say the same for many of the watches I've owned that use the same base caliber. IMPRESIVE! I also read that the watch is still water-resistant when the crown is unscrewed and in all the setting positions, though it is recommended to keep the crown screwed down for normal use. It is also signed with the traditional fish emblem, which designates a water-resistant IWC watch.

The crystal actually looks more like a lens then anything else. I have never seen anything like it. It is convex in nature and is 3.7mm thick. It is a true joy to look at, but can be a tad difficult to read at severe angles. Mind you when will you not be able to tilt your arm a few degrees? It is not coated with any anti-reflective material, which is not that big a deal. If the crystal would have been flat, I might have complained about this. It also protrudes ever so slightly above the bezel, making it susceptible to chips. Sapphire is VERY scratch-resistant, but is brittle.

The bezel is absolutely ingenious, in order to turn it you must push down on two opposite sides or it will not budge. This feature totally negates the possibility of accidental turning, which could shorten or more dangerously lengthen a dive. It can also be removed via tiny screws located between the case and the bezel. This is great. With prolonged use the bezel can become encrusted with debris such as salt, sand and silt. Instead of having the watch sent to a service center, the owner could clean it himself. Just like the crown, the bezel has an awesome bite and can easily be adjusted with gloves on. It is also fitted with a dot of Super Luminova for increased legibility in poor lighting conditions.

The IWC Aquatimer Chrono dial measures 32mm in diameter, large but not too large. It is mat black and because of the convex crystal it almost looks concave. It is perfect in every way, let me explain. I have yet to own a sports watch that has such an exact dial. The luminescent material is perfectly applied, no bleeding, no blotches and no holes. Speaking of luminescent material. Surprisingly my watch uses both Tritium and Super Luminova on the dial. Not sure what to make of it at first, I did some research and once I confirmed that it was indeed a mix of both materials, I realized that it was not such a bad idea after all. The most important information on a watch is the time. Therefore it makes sense to use tritium, since it glows constantly. Yet it is a radioactive (RA) substance and should be used sparingly. The rest of the markers are coated in Super Luminova, a non-RA substance that glows for about 4-5 hours. Two birds with one stone. The rest of the dial is very clean, not too much writing, mind you they could have done away with the word automatic, but I am just being picky. The date is located at the usual 3 o'clock and is painted white on black, which is exactly the way it should be.

An IWC Caliber 37524 powers the Aquatimer. It is based on the ETA 2892-A2, a rugged, ultra-thin movement found in many remarkable watches such as the Ulysse Nardin 1846 Marine Chronometer and the Omega Seamaster.

The ETA 2892-A2 has a diameter of 25.8mm; it is 3.6mm thick and has 21 jewels. It vibrates at a frequency of 28,800 bph (4 hertz) and has a power reserve of 42 hours. It has an Incabloc anti-shock system, a Navirox hairspring and a ball-bearing rotor that winds in both directions via a click wheel. The difference between the stock ETA and the IWC caliber are considerable.

Even though the movement is not visible from the outside, it is impeccably finished with gold plating, circular graining and Côtes de Genève engraving. It is also regulated in five positions to assure its incredible accuracy. Like many of the other wristwatches that use this ETA caliber, it has performed well within chronometer specifications.

The IWC Aquatimer Chrono bracelet is awesome! To help cut down on the watch looking like it's over powering on someone's wrist; IWC tapered the bracelet towards the clasp. They also made it so that it's very easy to add or remove links, or switch to the tear resistant nylon dive strap. The center links on the steel model do scratch easily, but I actually wear my watch for what it was designed for, so I have no problem with the scratches since they tell my story. The only down side to the bracelet is that it's integrated to the case so you can't use just any watchstrap on it.

People who try to put down this watch often bring up the lack of a wet suit extension on the watch, but the truth is most wet suit extension clasp on watches are too large for most wet suits. You end up having to put the watch on a different type of strap if you wear it over your wet suit, or you have to add links to the bracelet so it will fit right.

The tear-resistant nylon Velcro dive strap comes in two different sizes and colors, small and large and black and gray. The small strap is made for a person with a standard sized wrist, or if you're going to wear your watch on a wetsuit that is smaller than 7-mm thick. The large strap is made for people with wrist that are about 8-inches ore more or if you're going to be diving with a dry suit or a wetsuit that is thicker than 7-mm.

The strap is a really nice option to have, but it is not cheap since it cost $128 USD. The watch does not move around on your wrist with the strap on since the weighting of the watch is perfectly balanced. I personally prefer to wear my watches on a dive strap whenever I go swimming in salt water or SCUBA diving since a bracelet can easily obtain deep scratches from coral or rocks. Unlike other Velcro straps that I've worn on my watches, the one from IWC is very comfortable to wear and it does not rub the skin on your wrist so that it becomes raw.

Needless to say the IIWC Aquatimer Chrono is a definite keeper. Whether I will be seeking a stainless steel version in the future is still up for debate, but in the mean time I am very content with the model I have now. In my opinion, very few watches on the market right now can come close to its tool like attributes. It was truly designed for a diver. Too bad the deepest it will ever go is in my backyard pool, but it sure is nice to know that it can go places I can only dream of.

If you are looking for an understated, solid, comfortable, reliable and best of all cool sports watch, the IWC Aquatimer is the watch for you! If you need a little more flash and can handle heavy watches, look into the stainless steel version, it just might be your cup of tea.
